Improve your digestion with these simple steps.

Healthy Digestion

BY STELLA LUNA

Digestion is a key to your lifelong journey of health and wellness. Your brain is in your gut—your colon has more neurotransmitters than your brain!

So, let’s start with observing the bowel movements.

Take note this week. Maybe you would even like to keep a journal? (There is an app, actually several, for that!)

• Note how many times a day and what is it like.
• Note over your entire life what it was like.
What is it like when you are stressed?

Taking a look at your shit is real, this is a journey inside of yourself and you can choose to go as deep as you would like!

A Morning Digestion Routine

Drinking Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) upon rising can really help things along. The malic acid from the apples clears fat from the liver and gallbladder and assists in the body’s homeostasis. You can always add lemon to your water as well. And don’t go crazy we want this to be something that you can integrate into your life easier that way. I like ACV vs. lemons as I am lazy and don’t want to cut a lemon everyday!

So how do I know if my poop is healthy?

Well, here is a list from my dear friend Siva of Ayurveda by Siva.

Now let’s not get all nuts and start diagnosing ourselves and thinking there is something wrong!. Let’s just see where we are at and see what we can do to get it to get our digestion optimal.

Optimal bowel movements

• every morning upon rising
• not needing caffeine to happen
• easy to pass
• feels complete (and satisfying!)
• well formed log that is so long it curves
• no blood or mucus or flurries
• floats (bonus points)

Signs of Vata Imbalance

Too much air/dehydrated

• dry or hard
• not pooping everyday or at all different times (no rhythm)
• looks more like little pebbles instead of a log
• straining to get it out
• feels incomplete
• gas, bloating

Signs of Pitta (Fire) Imbalance

• loose or watery
• more than 2 times a day
• burns when it comes out
• long skinny poops indicate inflammation in colon
• red/ green/ yellow in color

Signs of Kapha (Earth/Oil) Imbalance

• smells like it has been sitting in the colon for a while
• comes mostly after eating
• mucus in stool (globs or stringy)

Notice the kinds of food that you take in and how they affect your stool.

Do you have a lot of fire in your diet and you happen to like fiery foods like spicy or hot food? Do you have signs of vata and you eat a lot of cold and dry food?

The key to all of this is to notice your habits, your patterns, observe your poop--it can tell you a lot of what is going on with you.
