Ganesh the Myth and Mantra

May 05, 2025

Once upon a time there was Shiva who was the Lord destruction and regeneration.  Shiva's consort is Parvati, she is the mother of the mountains representing the strongest form of nurturing. Shiva went off to the Himalayan mountains to meditate and Parvati got lonely.

So, she made a baby herself using clay. She blew life into the clay and had a son.

Shiva was unaware of Ganesha's existence because he was away. One day Parvati was in the house taking a bath and Shiva came home and didn't know who this young man was at his door, nor did Ganesha know that Shiva was his father. Ganesh was protecting his mother and Shiva was upset and wanted in, so they got in a big fight and Shiva cut Ganesha's head off. Uh oh, Parvati was beside herself. The village came quickly, and they decided to go to the forest to try and find a head for the boy and there was a wise old elephant that offered his head to the couple for their son. This is how Ganesh became a man with an elephant's head and why is known to be the deity that we ask to help us remove obstacles. This is also why is he often depicted as a child

Often, we can't see what is right in front of us and our passions get in our way.
