Aromatherapy Basics

Aromatherapy is the practice of using naturally extracted aromatic essences from plants (essential oils) to balance, harmonize and promote holistic healing of body, mind and spirit.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

Essential oils contain compounds, straight from the plants, that exert a pharmacological effect when they penetrate the body.  Essential oils vibrate at the highest frequency of any natural substance known to man. It is a medicine that invokes wellness and vitality.

HOW TO USE OILS:

It is important to use pure, therapeutic-grade essential oils that are concentrated naturally through steam distillation.  The use of synthetic materials to extract oils alters and affect the value and purity.

Inhaling

  • spraying in the air, diffusing, smelling

  • Inhaling essential oils can have an emotional impact on you because the smell is absorbed directly through the olfactory nerve.

    • Your olfactory nerve controls your sense of smell, it runs through the back of the nose into the temporal lobe of the brain.  The temporal lobe houses the limbic system - the hippocampus (formation of new memories) and the amygdala (emotional center of brain).

Topically

  • Some oils may be applied undiluted, in which case place 2 to 3 drops directly on the desired part of your body.  Others may need to be combined with a carrier oil.

  • Be sure educate yourself and know if it can be applied directly or if it needs a carrier oil. There are different recommendations for topical application for individual oils.

    • Examples of carrier oils: jojoba, almond, avocado, etc

Ingested

  • While there are some essential oils that should not be ingested, many can be safely used in an empty capsule or combined in a favorite recipe or with liquids.

    • Therapeutic-grade only! Lesser quality oils are often cut with preservatives and not safe for ingesting.

    • Safety is key, so always check the label or with a healthcare professional first to ensure an oil is meant to be used internally.

*Please Note: Use therapeutic–grade oils in glass bottles or stainless steel only. Therapeutic–grade oils are so potent, that they begin to break down petro-chemicals and leech plastic particles into the water.*
